age discrimination in business (or how not to appear outdated) PDF Print E-mail

I was recently speaking with a friend who is in the midst of transitioning his career. He mentioned that he thought he was being rejected from consideration with companies before even getting an interview, based on his age... And he's not even old!

Did he have his age on his applications or resume? NO!

But what he did have.... Is a contact address for his home in a well known retirement community where he takes care of an aging parent.

I advised him to get a private mailbox or use a friend's address for his job search instead, and see if that improved his results.... I also advised him to only list the most recent 10 years of job history, as anything beyond that likely has outdated skills for today's job market anyhow.

This advice isn't just for job-seekers... In today's economy, small businesses need to keep their appearances up-to-date.

Don't let dated promotional materials, old technology, and outdated software give your customers the wrong impression of your company. Let grayCeworks give your company's image a facelift!

Do you recognize that this is the best time to get the loan, which will help you.

All of the above information is relevant. I sense the same-when you get a phone screen/interview the organization is excited, and invite you for a on site interview! Then upon your arrival, the act like like Ms. Pac Man just munched them up!

I think any one of the items of advice are certainly relavent. I too have that feeling of being edged out due to age. I have taken all the precautions that I can but to no avail. I went to one interview and the faces on the committed said it all. They were polite and professional but the eyes say volumes. As crazy as it sounds, a little hair color and/or different haircut/sytle could help. Tell your friend to keep trying. It's disheartening, I know.
